Advanced Multi-Timeframe Gold Strategy

A disciplined multi-timeframe breakout engine built specially for gold

The premise. Gold trends hard, and it chops harder. Most breakout systems fail because they fire inside a range, get stopped, and fire again. This EA refuses to trade a breakout unless the daily chart has already proven the market is trending with genuine momentum. It then waits on the 4-hour chart for the price to break a 20-bar range in that same direction. If either condition is missing, it does nothing. That restraint is the entire edge.

Stage One: Daily trend validation

Three independent conditions must all be true before a single order is even considered.

  1. Price location. Daily close above the 100 EMA for longs, below it for shorts.
  2. EMA slope. The 100 EMA must be genuinely angled in the trade direction. A flat moving average kills the signal immediately.
  3. ADX above 20.0. Confirms directional conviction actually exists, regardless of which way the market is pointing.

A ranging market cannot produce a valid daily trend reading. That makes this EA structurally incapable of overtrading chop. It is not waiting for permission from an indicator; it is being denied it.

Stage Two: 4-Hour Donchian Breakout

The trigger is the highest high and lowest low across 20 closed H4 bars.

  • Buy only on an H4 close above the 20-bar high while the daily trend is bullish.
  • Sell only on an H4 close below the 20-bar low while the daily trend is bearish.

Closed bar confirmation only. Intraday wicks, liquidity sweeps, and stop hunts never trigger an entry, because none of them produces a close beyond the channel.

Stage Three: Execution discipline

One position per account, per magic number. No averaging, no layering, no reversing into a losing idea. Once it is in, it manages. It does not add.

The risk architecture

  • 0.5% of equity per trade. Lot size is reverse engineered from the exact stop distance, so risk stays constant whether Gold is quiet or violent.
  • Initial stop at 2.5 × ATR. Wide enough to survive normal volatility, tight enough that a failed breakout costs you half a per cent instead of a quarter of the account.
  • Max drawdown kill switch at 15% from peak equity. Everything closes, the EA goes silent, and it stays silent until you intervene. No exceptions, no recovery trades.
  • Daily loss limit at 3.0% from that day's starting balance. No new entries until the next calendar day. A bad day stays a bad day instead of becoming a bad week.
  • Dynamic spread filter. Entries are rejected when spread exceeds 0.10 × ATR. This adapts to Gold's changing liquidity instead of using a hardcoded point value that is too loose at London open and too tight at rollover.

Exits: how it rides a trend and how it gets out

  • No fixed take profit. The trailing stop is built from a 22-bar Donchian channel combined with a 3.0 × ATR buffer. It rides extended Gold runs, locks profit progressively, and closes when structure breaks rather than when a round number is hit. This is what allows one winner to pay for a series of small losses.
  • Six-bar cooldown after every entry. Stops the EA from re-entering an exhausted move three bars later and turning one loss into three.
  • Friday flat at 20:00 server time. Everything closes before the weekend, because no technical edge survives a gap and no stop loss is honoured across one.

What it is not

No martingale. No grid. No hedging. No recovering losers with bigger sizes. Every position carries a stop from the millisecond it opens, and three independent circuit breakers sit behind that.

Disclaimer

Trading foreign exchange and commodities (especially Gold/XAUUSD) on margin carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Past performance of the EA or backtested results does not guarantee future results. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to trade, you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. There is a possibility that you may sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What exactly has to be true for this EA to open a trade? A: Five things. Daily close beyond the 100 EMA, the 100 EMA sloping in that same direction, ADX above 20, an H4 close beyond the 20 bar Donchian extreme in the same direction and spread inside the dynamic limit. Miss one of them, and nothing happens.

Q: Why Daily Plus H4 instead of just trading the breakout on one chart? A: A breakout on a single timeframe is only a range break, and most ranges break in both directions before choosing one. Validating the trend one timeframe higher means the EA only ever trades breakouts that agree with the dominant direction. It gives up the fastest and noisiest signals and keeps the ones that actually extend.

Q: Why ADX, and why 20? A: Price can sit above a rising EMA in a market with zero directional conviction. ADX measures whether a trend exists at all, independently of direction. Below 20 the market is ranging, and breakouts fail at a punishing rate. The threshold is the floor that keeps this EA out of chop.

Q: Why is the stop 2.5 × ATR instead of a fixed number of points? A: Gold volatility is not constant. A fixed stop is too tight during an expansion and too loose during a contraction. ATR scales the stop to the current environment, which keeps per trade risk meaningful and stops the EA from being flushed out by ordinary noise.

Q: How does it take profit? Is there a target? A: There is no fixed take profit. Exits are handled by the trailing stop, which merges a 22 bar Donchian channel with a 3.0 × ATR buffer. The trade runs while the structure holds and closes when the structure breaks. That is the only way a breakout system captures the multi-day gold moves that pay for everything else.

Q: How many positions can it hold at once? A: One, per symbol and magic number. While a position is open, the EA stops evaluating new entries entirely, then waits out a six-bar cooldown after the exit. This is a quality-over-frequency system, not a volume system.

Q: What happens on a bad day? A: Two independent guards fire. If equity falls 3.0% from that day's starting balance, no new trades are opened until the next calendar day. Separately, if equity falls 15% below its all-time peak, the EA closes everything and shuts down permanently until you reset it. Losses are contained, never compounded.

Q: Does it trade through illiquid hours or rollover? A: It will not enter when spread exceeds 0.10 × ATR, which is the practical signature of thin liquidity. That single dynamic rule covers rollover, session gaps and broker spread widening far better than a fixed point limit ever could, because it tightens and loosens with the market itself.

Q: Does it hold positions over the weekend? A: Not with Friday flat enabled. All positions close at 20:00 server time on Friday. Weekend gaps in Gold are untradeable risk, and a stop loss placed on Friday is a suggestion by Monday.

Q: Can it run on instruments other than XAUUSD? A: It is calibrated to gold. The ADX threshold, the 100 EMA period, the 20 bar breakout window, the ATR multiples and the spread logic are all tuned to how Gold expands and contracts. It will execute elsewhere, but the parameter set is not guaranteed off XAUUSD, and support covers gold only.

Q: What account size does it require? A: The 0.5% risk model is percentage based, so it scales with the balance. The only real constraint is the broker minimum lot: on very small balances the calculated lot can drop below the broker floor, and in that case the EA simply does not trade rather than force a position larger than your risk setting permits.
